RPRA meet DEFRA regarding Avian Flu...

Received from Peter Bryant - RPRA General Manager 25/11/2005.

Pat Mitchell, Tom Dawson of the NEHU and I attended DEFRA yesterday.

The meeting was an exploratory one with regards to racing. We explained the racing procedures, race organisation, liberations etc and many notes were taken by the DEFRA representatives. Their gut feeling at the moment was that racing would be able to take place in 2006 subject to licences being approved by the Local Area Health Offices. They were aware that there were some races that traditionally take place on Boxing Day so they needed to get something on line asap.

We have agreed to meet again on Weds 7th December at Page Street around midday top progress the issue.

Whilst we had their undivided attention we stressed the point that their stance on sales and shows was over the top. I argued that, with the veterinary advice currently available, I could not see how they could substantiate tough restrictions when the threat from pigeons was so low and that there was a very low risk in the UK from LPAI let alone HPAI. I personally could not see the difference between clearance sales, shows and traditional sales at this moment in time. I left them with the 2 most recent Dr Chalmers papers and hope that they will review the situation. All pigeon representatives present stressed the financial implications of the banning of sales and restrictions at shows and that this was hurting small clubs as well as businesses. I intend to collate letters from affected traders over the next week to present at the next meeting with DEFRA. If you have been financially affected by the ban/restriction on sales etc please send me an e mail or letter stating how this has occurred and to what extent. The more evidence we can produce the better.
